Queensland Haem Hub

For Patients

What is a Haematologist?

A haematologist is a doctor who specialises in diagnosing, treating and managing diseases that affect your blood, bone marrow and lymphatic system.

Blood diseases may be benign (noncancerous) disorders or malignant (cancerous). Blood disorders and blood cancer may have mild symptoms or be life-threatening. Some diseases keep your blood from flowing (blood clots), while others make you bleed more than normal.

Many haematologists, like Dr Chatrapati, also work in a diagnostic laboratory examining microscopic samples of blood and bone marrow or performing specialised investigations to establish a diagnosis in patients with blood disorders.
